Hydrangea Gumpaste Flowers by Vancouver Cake Designer

Hey Cake Lovers!!!

Today was an exciting day at Vancouver Cakes aka Lyttle Bake Shop!  Today I got to experiment making flowers!  Yup!  That’s right, it’s one of my favourite things to do!

This weekend I’m creating a couple of wedding cakes.  One of my Vancouver clients requested to have sugar Hydrangea Flowers on her cake.  I never turn down a challenge, so I said, “Sure!” (I have never made a Hydrangea Flower in my life…LOL!)

So, you’re probably thinking…”is she nuts?!”  Taking on a wedding with flowers you’ve never created before!  Don’t worry, I’m not nuts, just confident!  I always say, if someone else can do it, then so can I!  Right?!

Anyway, I shouldn’t have waited last minute to experiment with making Hydrangeas, but I figured, if I’m going to do all the work of trying them, I mine as well make them for the actual wedding cake!  Wouldn’t you agree?

Needless to say, it was a little challenging!  I looked long and hard to find tutorials and videos on how to make wired hydrangeas, No one teaches this stuff!  Why is it they only show you how to make the petals, I want to make the actual flower, not just the petal!

After quite a few stressful hours, I figured it out!  I will make a tutorial with pictures and also one in video format, in the very near future to show you how to make these beautiful flowers so no one has to go through what I went through!  I’ll show you step by step exactly what I did!

Here are some of the Hydrangeas I made today:

They are still a little powdery as I have not glazed them yet.  I have to say, they’re not bad for my first time!!!  A couple more times and I bet I can make them look very real!  I still think these are very beautiful to put on a wedding cake!

What do you think of my Hydrangea Flowers?

Vancouver Cake Designer, Lisa Lyttle bakes 1000 Cupcakes for Art World Expo 2012!!!

Hey Cake Eaters!

Vancouver Cake Designer, Lisa Lyttle here…hope you all had a fantastic weekend!!!

Well, I need to tell you all about mine!  I sponsored an event to support the Make and Break it Art Foundation at Telus World of Science in Vancouver, BC, called Art World Expo 2012!  It was absolutely fabulous!  About 1000 attendees and over 100 vendors came to the event…Bif Naked performed!  There was a Body Art Competition and a Fashion Show!  Lots of fun!

I personally made 1000 colourful cupcakes for the event, plus had 7 cakes to make on top of that!  Talk about stress!!!  LOL!  Next time I’m hiring some helpers!!

I have to say, I would consider myself to be quite a strong person, mentally and emotionally that is.  That being said, this past weekend got the best of me.  I had less than 20 hours of sleep in 5 days, by the 5th day I couldn’t take it anymore and broke down.  For once in my life I felt defeated, hopeless…was too tired and weak to move, walk, or work on my cakes and I had 3 cakes to finish for some Vancouver clients. The thought of my cakes not being finished when the client arrives was NOT an option, but unfortunately it crossed my mind and gave me tremendous stress ad anxiety.   What was I to do?  Well, I’m proud to say, I succeeded!  I took a 5 hour nap and started my cakes at 3:30am and finished at 9am for pickup.  Still can’t believe it!  Not sure how I did it, but I did!!  This morning, I slept until 10:30am…I NEVER do that!!!  Obviously I needed it!  Haha!

It was such a rewarding weekend on many levels!  The biggest challenge I have ever given myself and I succeeded!  Maybe I can take over the world!  LOL!

Here are some fabulous pictures some amazing photographers took of Vancouver Cakes aka Lyttle Bake Shop at the event.  I am of course, the blonde with big hair!!

This is one of the Body Art Competition Models with me of course!

Me and my booth!  Gotta love the shiny silver pants, eh?!
